How better to study the times and setting of Jane Austen's novels than in the comfort of the house used by the BBC in the 1995 filming of Jane Austen's Persuasion? Each time I guide a group of Jane Austen enthusiasts around Bath, I say wouldn't it be lovely to find a house in the city from which I could run my courses and they all breathe a collective sigh of ecstasy. Now the dream has become a reality and I can't wait to share it with you at Sir Walter's elegant town house, where we will experience together the Pleasures of Bath. Jane Austen In Bath Study Courses give you the opportunity to learn about and experience all the pleasures of the city from Sir Walter Elliot's well-appointed house. Here, you are guaranteed true Harville hospitality and sumptuous Regency costume suppers which would satisfy the palate of any General Tilney. Enjoy the company of clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation, in the daily sessions which focus on Persuasion and Northanger Abbey and related aspects of the author's life and times. Trace Jane Austen's footsteps on a guided tour along elegant streets and crescents she would recognise today and, like Catherine Morland, dance in your chair all the way home. The courses are held in the elegant spaciousness of Sir Walter Elliot's House in New Sydney Place enjoying similar views over Sydney Gardens Vauxhall as the Austen family admired when they lived a few doors away at No. 4 Sydney Place between 1801 and 1804. Hazel will guide and lead you through the delights of Jane Austen's novels and take you to the places the novelist herself visited. You will have the opportunity to discuss the themes in the novels as well as exploring the social and historical influences on her writing. Some of the course have been timed to supplement the excellent trips to the various film locations organised by Pride & Prejudice Tours, (which Hazel will be accompanying) but the courses are all self-contained and so work well even for visitors who are not going on a Pride & Prejudice Tour.
As time permits, we have arranged trips to take you by coach to Steventon where Jane Austen was born and to Chawton, where she revised and wrote her six published novels. On other days there are tours to towns and places of interest familiar to Jane Austen and her contemporaries. Of course, you cannot come all the way to Bath without having some free time to enjoy the delights of this World Heritage City. We include a free evening to plan your own trip to the theatre or dine out with new friends. The longer courses have a further free afternoon in case you are tempted to sample the shopping or pamper yourself in the new Spa. Sample Itineraries are available on request, and you will receive full details when you confirm your course dates. Bookings are made through Jane Austen in Bath website where you will find full details. If you have any questions about the courses, you can contact Hazel.
