  • Urchfont Manor, built in 1678, lies on the edge of of Urchfont near Devizes in Wiltshire. The picturesque village has thatched cottages, a duck pond, cricket pitch, pub and 14th century church.

The house was bought by Wiltshire County Council in 1947 and was the first in the country to be established as a residential centre. It is renowned for the friendly and relaxed atmosphere, superb food and the quality of the teaching staff. The grounds are delightful with a fascinating variety of mature trees, a walled garden, apple orchard, croquet lawns and colourful flower borders.

The residential accommodation includes individual rooms in the main house, modern bedrooms in adjoining converted houses and a thatched cottage.

There is more information on the Urchfont Manor website.

There will be one course at Urchfont in 2010:

Mon 7 to Fri 11 June - SENSE AND SENSIBILITY
Further details will be available when their 2010 brochure is published in mid-October.

Urchfont is spoilingly beautiful – do book a room in the main house if you can, the food is delectable, and the people were almost as delicious. We spent five days indulging in all things Austen, and Hazel is a gentle and impeccably knowledgeable tutor. Our day trip to Chawton - with private tour of the Great House - was memorable and the weather sublime. Here we saw Jane’s possessions in her own home, and heard her talked about by people who love her. My only reservation in writing this down is that other people may discover the magic and I may not be able to book a place on the next course.
