Having just completed work on a text book for Business English I felt that I had deserved a treat and scanned The Jane Austen Society News Letter for courses or conferences on the works of my favourite author. I found an advertisement for Hazel Jones' Jane Austen residential courses at the Ammerdown Centre. Ammerdown's website caught my attention and what they claimed proved to be true: peace and rest, attentive staff, gorgeous gardens and excellent food. Best of all, however, the course itself surpassed all my expectations. Hazel Jones managed to put her subject "Pride and Prejudice" into perspective, providing in-depth information on Jane Austen's life and times, combined with a scholar's insight into her style and a great sense of humour. Valuable contributions by the participants led to lively discussions and when the group parted we had become friends.
